Al and Erla (Urban) Fallenstein, both age 63, of North Mankato, died together on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Nicollet County.
Visitation will be held from 3-8 p.m. Thursday, December 18 at Mankato Mortuary. A private family service will be held later. A public memorial service will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 20 at the Taylor Center at Minnesota State University. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to ISJ Hospital Foundation, Courage Center, Holy Rosary Catholic Church, or Messiah Lutheran Church.
Erla Mae (Urban) Fallenstein
Erla Mae (Urban) Fallenstein, age 63, of Mankato, died suddenly on December 16, 2003. Erla was born on January 23, 1940 to Fredrick and Dorothy Urban in Madelia, MN. She graduated from Buffalo High School in 1958, a member of National Honor Society, and attended Abbott Northwestern Nursing School. She moved to Mankato to work as an RN at Immanuel Hospital in Mankato, where she met Al Fallenstein. Al and Erla were married on December 30, 1966. Her life was devoted to caring for her family and friends, and her thoughtful ways will be remembered by all. She was active in her church, an avid flower gardener and an AVID Minnesota sports fan. She also loved spending time at their second home in Naples, Florida. She was a loving, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and daughter. Erla will be missed deeply and fondly remembered by all who knew her.
She is survived by two children, John Fallenstein and his wife, Jackie of St. Paul, Kristin Fallenstein and her two children, Nathan and Nicholas Vogel of North Mankato. She is also survived by her mother, Dorothy Urban of Mankato; two siblings, Wallace and Sandy Urban of Crete, IL, Mylla Urban of Maple Grove; an uncle, aunts, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father.
Albert Ernest Fallenstein
Albert Ernest Fallenstein, age 63, of Mankato, died suddenly on December 16, 2003. Al was born on February 4, 1940, in Mankato to Clarence and Ruth (Miller) Fallenstein, the fifth of twelve siblings. He graduated from Mankato High School in 1958 and from Mankato State College in 1964 with a BA in accounting. Al opened his own accounting firm in Mankato in 1965, and in 1966, he married Erla Mae Urban. He was very active in the Mankato Jaycees in the late 1960s. Al and Erla moved to Salt Lake City, Sioux City, St. Paul, and eventually settled in Mankato in 1975. Al began working at Carlson Craft in 1975, and worked for Taylor Corporation for the remainder of his career, eventually becoming Executive Vice President. Al was also part owner of Rembrandt Industries, an egg farm in Iowa. Al received both Humanitarian and Distinguished Alumni awards from Mankato State University. Al was a successful businessman trusted by many as a confidante and advisor. He served on the boards of many organizations, including Taylor Corporation, Courage Center, Immanuel-St. Josephs Hospital, University at Mankato Foundation, and was most recently named to Governor Pawlentys Minnesota Citizens Forum on Health Care Costs. Al owned a minority share of the Minnesota Timberwolves, which brought great enjoyment to both Al and Erla. Al also co-owned a thoroughbred racehorse, Frosty Prince, which won several races this year. Als first and most important interest was his family; he enjoyed immensely spending time with immediate and extended family members. Als other interests included all Minnesota sports, especially the Timberwolves and Twins, and vacationing in Naples, FL. Als generous spirit and inspirational character have influenced many, and he will be sorely missed by all.
He is survived by two children, John Fallenstein and his wife, Jackie of St. Paul, Kristin Fallenstein and her two children, Nathan and Nicholas Vogel of North Mankato. He is also survived by eight siblings: Marilyn and Bill Brielmaier of Lake Washington, Fay Fallenstein of North Mankato, Tom and Judy Fallenstein of Madison Lake, Jim and Jenice Fallenstein of Mankato, Mark and Peggy Fallenstein of North Mankato, John and Becky Fallenstein of Eugene, OR, Judy and Tony McCabe of Shoreview, Susan and Rick Roemer of North Mankato; aunts, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and two sisters.
