Vernon Henry Dilly, age 84, of Mankato, died Monday, October 13, 2003, at the Mankato House Health Care Center.
Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, October 19, 2003, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mankato, with Rev. Mary Iverson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Mankato. Memorials may be given to the donors choice. Arrangements are with Mankato Mortuary.
Vernon was born on October 17, 1918, in Ashton, Iowa. He was the son of William and Anna (Arends) Dilly. Vernon was a 1935 graduate of Ashton High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 " 1945 in Europe. Following his discharge, he lived in Mountain Lake, MN. Vernon was united in marriage to Gertrude Jensen on June 4, 1949, in Mankato. Vernon and Gertrude lived in Salem, South Dakota for seven years, before moving to Mankato in 1956. He began his career with Hubbard & Palmer grain elevators, which over the years later became Archer-Daniels-Midland, Farmers Union Grain Terminal Association, and Cenex-Harvest States. For over 35 years, Vernon was a line superintendent for several grain elevators throughout southern Minnesota.
He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mankato, where he served as an usher for many years. He was also a past member of the American Legion, VFW, and the Elks Club. Vernon enjoyed hunting, especially for pheasant, duck, and deer. His other pastimes included fishing, wood working, traveling, and dancing. Due to poor health, he had spent the last six years at the Mankato House Health Care Center.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Gertrude Dilly of North Mankato; three daughters and their husbands, Lynn and Jim Morris of Northbrook, IL, Cheryl and Brad Jones of Wayzata, MN, Gina Dilly and Tim DeJardin of Rochester, MN; one son and his wife, Mark and Jeanne Dilly of Inverness, IL; two sons from a previous marriage, Kent Frisch and his wife, Pat of Emerald City, Queensland, Australia and Scott Frisch and his wife, Cortney of Visalia, California; eleven grandchildren; one great-grandson; one brother, Marvin Dilly of Ashton, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Leroy Dilly.
