John A. "Jack" Hunziker, age 88, of Mankato, died on July 29, 2009 at Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Ss Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Rev. Syl Brown officiating. Burial will be at All Saint's Catholic Cemetery in Madison Lake following the Mass. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 31 from 4-8 p.m. at Mankato Mortuary.
Jack was born January 23, 1921 in Minneapolis, MN to Arthur and Maria (Crahen) Hunziker. The family later moved to Mankato. He graduated from Loyola High School. During World War II, Jack particiapated in the landing on Omaha Beach, served at a prisoner of war camp and was in an engineering unit in France. After being discharged as a sergeant, he attended St. Thomas College in Saint Paul and focused on the construction engineering program and played on the football team.
Jack married Jean Brown on November 27, 1947 and moved back to Mankato in 1950, where he began as a salesman for Brown Motors and eventually became general manager. In 1955, he began a career in real estate at Beaudette and Rebstock, later partnering with Kenneth Rebstock. Among the organizations that have benefited from his work are the Mankato Elks Club, where he helped found All City teams in football and boys and girls basketball; St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church as a fundraiser; Loyola and Good Counsel building fund drives; the United Way; Boy Scouts; American Red Cross; the American Legion and the World War II Last Man's Club; and the Chairman of the Athletic Booster Club's Indian Scholarship fund at Mankato State College for student athletes.
Jack is survived by his children: Bridget (Thomas) Butzer of Minneapolis, Thomas (Mary Egan) of Golden Valley, Kate (Reid) Simonett of Lees Summit, MO, Patrick of Shoreview, Martha (Thomas) Bohrer of North Mankato, Jeanna (Jeffery) Knealing of East Bethel, and Denise (fianc"e Paul Stensgard) of Mendota Heights; grandchildren: Michael and Jacqueline Simonett, Judd and Mark Hunziker, Matthew and Jane Knealing, and Molly and Brian Bohrer; sister-in-law Arlene (Mike) Hunziker and brother-in-law Ralph Ireland.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, wife Jean, brothers, William, Eugene, and James, and sister Mary.
