Mary Elouise Nothwehr, age 85 of Mankato, died of an apparent heart attack on Sunday, February 10, 2013 at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato. A Memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, February 15, 2013 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Mankato with Rev. Paul Lauer officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m., Friday at the Church. Burial will take place in the spring at Pleasant View Cemetery, rural Amboy. Memorials may be given to VINE, NAMI (National Association for Mental Illness), or the Mankato Symphony. Mankato Mortuary in charge of arrangements.
Mary was born March 5, 1927 in Minneapolis to Harold and Agnes (Behr) Otterstein. She attended and graduated from Central High School in Minneapolis. Mary completed a course of study toward a degree in Medical Technology. She was united in marriage to Donald Nothwehr on September 4, 1947 in Amboy. They made their home in North Mankato for 40 years, moving to Realife in Mankato. She was an assistant to her husband at his State Farm office. She also was a homemaker for her five children.
Mary enjoyed playing bridge, friends, knitting, and needlepoint. She volunteered for VINE, MRCI, Hot Meals on Wheels, Mankato Symphony, PTA, grade school Grandmother, Red Cross, and Our Savior's Lutheran Church.
Mary, affectionately known as "Second Hand Rose" is survived by her four children, Larry (Christine) Nothwehr, of Mason City, IA, their children, Meaghan, Matthew, and Lauren; Cindy (Tom) Salsbery of Mankato, their children, Meredith, Mitchell, and Katherine; Tim (Jill) Nothwehr of Savage, MN; Mary Kay Penaloza of Liverpool, NY, her children, Andres and Clara; foreign students, Kiki Nelissen-Kleipool of Holland, Shafagh Bahadori of Iran, Paul and Susan Chih of Taiwan. Mary was preceded in death by her daughter, Marnee and husband, Donald.
