Helen Welsh Sohre, 93 of Good Thunder, MN, died peacefully on July 13, 2011.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, July 17, 2011 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Good Thunder. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Saturday, July 16, 2011 at North Mankato Mortuary - NORTHVIEW, 2060 Commerce Drive, North Mankato, MN and continue one hour prior to service at the church. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.
Helen was born at Webster City, Iowa, on April 11th, 1918 to Vesta Barton and Gertie Iola (Mooday) Welsh. Helen moved with her family to Greenings, Illinois in 1921, where she attended school. Her family moved to Good Thunder, MN on March 21st, 1935. Helen was employed at Kleist Bakery of Good Thunder. She later worked for Montgomery Ward, Mankato as a clerk/accountant.
On June 1st, 1946, Helen was married to Merlin E. Sohre of rural Good Thunder, at St. John's Lutheran Church. Helen was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, St. John's Ladies Aid, The Lutheran Women's Missionary League, PTL, PTA, and AAL. For eighteen years, Helen was a 4-H Leader of Lyra Merryworkers 4-H Club. She was also a member and home counselor for Blue Earth County Extension Office for many years. Helen served as a superintendent in the Culinary Arts Class A Building, for seventeen years, at the Blue Earth County Fair. Helen was a member of the First State Bank Primetimers since 1982.
Helen is survived by six children, sixteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Arthur and Patricia Sohre of Lake Crystal, children Kerri, Sarah, and Hannah; Janice and Terry Whitney of Delavan, children Brian and Jodie; Linda Wallace of Winnebago, children Kay (Matt) Stern, Sheena (Jason) Possin and Thomas (Amanda); Donna Sampson of Good Thunder, children Heidi Larson, Jeremiah and Dorinda (Jason) Kruggel; Richard and Kathy Sohre of Good Thunder, children Jill, Julie and Jay; and Jolene Schulz of St. Clair, children Karl and Bradley.
Helen is survived by one sister, Louise (Walter) Birr of Good Thunder; and in-laws; Elmer and Lela Sohre, Elverna and Elmer Schimmele, Leroy and Arla Sohre, Glen and Marianne Sohre, all of Good Thunder, and Pip Holtz of St. Clair; many nieces and nephews.
Helen was proceeded into death by her husband, Merlin Sohre, on November 18, 1976; her grandchild, Tina Wallace; son-in-law, Wayne Sampson; parents, three sisters and three brothers.
