Florence "Babe" Rosemarie Papke, 84, died Saturday, July 9th after a brief battle with cancer, at her home with her loving family at her side.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at Holy Rosary Catholic Church on Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at 10:30 am with Fr. Peter Nosbush officiating. Burial will follow at Woodland Hills Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 4:00 pm " 7:00 pm at North Mankato Mortuary NORTHVIEW and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Babe was born December 18, 1926, to Henry and Gertrude (Meuwissen) Haasken in Cologne, MN. She graduated from Central High School and entered nurses training in Minneapolis. Upon completion she moved to Mankato where she was employed as a surgical nurse at Immanuel Hospital.
On April 30th, 1949, Babe was united in marriage to Owen M. Papke in Cologne, MN. The couple made their home in North Mankato. Following the birth of their children, Jeff and Leatha, Babe left her nursing profession and became a home maker.
Babe was a superb fast pitch softball pitcher for the Mankato Aces leading them to several state championships. She was inducted into the Mankato Softball Hall of Fame. Babe also enjoyed playing volleyball and was an accomplished bowler. She served as the President of the Mankato Women's Bowling Association for 20 years and served in the MN Women's Bowling Association for 17 years in various positions including Director, Sergeant at Arms, 1st Vice President and Member Emeriti. Babe was inducted into the State Women's Bowling Hall of Fame and the Mankato USBC Women's Bowling Association Hall of Fame for her service to the state and local associations. She served on the Y.W.C.A. Board of Directors as Treasurer for a number of years and volunteered at her church, Holy Rosary.
Babe's greatest joy was spending time with family and friends. With them she shared her love of fishing, bowling, playing cards, watching the MN Twins and most of all spending time at the lake. Babe was a devoted gardener and loved sharing the bounty with all, especially her prized raspberry and grape jams. She was a very involved grandma and great supporter of her grandchildren's activities.
Babe is survived by son, Jeff (Deb) Papke of Shorewood; daughter, Leatha (Bob) Norman of North Mankato; grandchildren, Steven, Scott and Samantha Norman and Jacob, Taylor and Nicole Papke; sisters and brother in-law Hope Hron, Pauline (Lyle) Henkensiefken, and Irene Steinbrueck; sister in-law Lorna Haasken; many nieces and nephews.
Babe was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Owen, in 2001; sister and brother-in-law, Sally (Cletus) Wagner; brother and sister in-law Carl (Ethel) Haasken; brother George Haasken; brothers-in-law Dale Hron and Donald Steinbrueck
