Irving Charles Shaffer, age 87, died Saturday, July 9, 2011 in North Mankato surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at Grace Baptist Church in Mankato. Burial with military honors will be at Woodland Hills Memorial Park in Mankato. Visitation will be held from 6 " 8 p.m., Monday at North Mankato Mortuary " NORTHVIEW 2060 Commerce Drive, North Mankato, and one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday. Memorials to Grace Christian School or the Salvation Army.
Irving was born July 6, 1924 to Edward and Janetta (Blowers) Shaffer in Winnebago, MN. He grew up on their small farm on the edge of town in Winnebago. He graduated from Winnebago High School. After high school he enlisted in the US Army and served most of World War II in the Philippines. Irving met the love of his life, Marie Nelson when he came back to Winnebago in 1947. Irving was united in marriage on June 6, 1948. She was 17 he was 23. The Lord blessed them with three boys and one girl.
Irving and Marie loved the Lord and joined Grace Baptist church in 1961. Irv especially liked the Bible study class that was taught by Pastor Michel.
He worked for 27 years as a painter for school district #77. They nicknamed him "Rembrandt" because he was such a perfectionist painter.
Irv had a quick wit and a joyful existence. He loved God, his family, hunting, and fishing. Irving and Marie spent many hours in their little boat they called the "tin tub".
Irv and Marie made their home in Mankato/North Mankato area for many years. They were married 63 years. His granddaughter, Alisha Mack and her grandpa had a special bond.
Irving is survived by his wife, Marie of North Mankato; son Larry (Pam) Shaffer of Salem, OR; daughter, Sharon Bauman of Victoria, MN; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Randy and Michael; one sister, Crystal.
