Dorothy "Dottie" Emily Mattes, age 89 of Alvin, Texas, formerly of North Mankato, went peacefully to Heaven on Saturday, June 18, 2011 surrounded by her loving family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in North Mankato with Rev. Peter Nosbush officiating. Burial will be in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 " 8 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service on Thursday at North Mankato Mortuary - NORTHVIEW. Visitation will be held one hour before the service on Friday at the church. Memorials may be given to the donor's choice.
She is survived by two sons and their wives, Gene and Lola Mattes, Bill and Nancy Mattes; two daughters and their husbands, Kathy and Gary Wass, Sr., Sharon and Joe Stoffregen; nine grandchildren, Kris Mattes, Tracy and Kevin Goss, Gary Jr. and Kristen Wass, Nicole and Andy Straka, Andrea Mattes, Ryan Mattes, Michelle and Jon Hermanson, Amanda Stoffregen, Stacy Stoffregen; five great grandchildren, Madison Goss, Matthew Straka, Aiden Wass, Ariel Straka, Jolee Wass; two sisters, Rose Ranweiler, Belva and husband, Bob Harris.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, loving husband, Joseph of 63 years; great-grandson, Jacob Wass; brother, William Jr., and great-grandpa, Bill.
Dorothy was born June 16, 1922 in Gregory County, near Dallas, South Dakota to Emma Rose (Dobesh) and William M. Hlavac Sr. Dorothy's family moved to Mountain Lake and later to Gibbon. There she met and married Joseph L. Mattes on August 21, 1940. Dorothy and Joseph farmed near Gibbon for several years. They moved to California and Washington before returning to Minnesota living in North Mankato. Joe and Dorothy started their own drywall business with their sons Gene and Bill. Dorothy was the bookkeeper for the company. In 1982 Dorothy and Joe moved to Alvin, TX.
Dorothy was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in North Mankato. She was a Den Mother for Cub Scouts and did Volunteer Work. Our sweet and loving Dottie is now in heaven watching over us all, in between episodes of "The Gene Autry Show" and games of Canasta with Pops!
