Elmer Ikier

Elmer K. Ikier, age 91, of North Mankato, died Sunday, July 22, 2007 at Alterra Sterling House in Mankato. Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m., Saturday, July 28, 2007 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Mankato, with Rev. James Pragman officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Hills Memorial Park in Mankato. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. on Friday at Mankato Mortuary and continues one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

Elmer was born on November 14, 1915 in Vernon Center Township, Blue Earth County. He was the son of Wilhelm and Anna (Kietzer) Ikier. He attended Porter's Public School in rural Vernon Center and St. John's Lutheran School in Willow Creek. His family moved to Okabena, MN in 1929. Elmer graduated from Okabena High School, attended Mankato Commercial College, and graduated from the College of Advanced Traffic in Chicago, IL. He worked in Rosemount and Okabena before serving in the U.S. Army during WWII and later in the Army Reserve, achieving the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. Elmer was united in marriage to Bernice Wilson Nielsen on September 7, 1946 in Lake Crystal. He retired as Director of Transportation from Honeymead Products Co. and Holsum Foods on November 30, 1980, where he was employed for 33 years. Elmer was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, the International Lutheran Laymen's League, VFW Post 950, American Legion Post 518, the Southern Minnesota Traffic Club, and the Transportation Club of Minneapolis and St. Paul. He was a past chairman of the Transportation Committee of Mankato Area Chamber of Commerce and a former member of the Mankato Airport Advisory Commission. Elmer also taught for several years at the Mankato Technical Institute. While building 3 duck-hunting boats, Elmer enjoyed hunting, fishing, curling, golf, gardening, and the outdoors.

Elmer is survived by his son, Paul (Cheryl) Ikier of Fridley; daughter, Charri (Richard) Ikier-Attenberger of Kasota; step-daughter, Joann Foster of New London; eleven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother, Donald (Neva) Ikier of Mankato; also nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bernice in 2005; and one step-sister, Ruby Hartog.
