Emelyn Irene Larson, age 88, of Mankato, died Wednesday, July 18, 2007 surrounded by her family at Oaklawn Health Care Center, Mankato.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at Grace Lutheran Church, Mankato with Pastor Joel Erickson, Pastor John Dainsberg, and Pastor Mark Bendell officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Mankato. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday, July 23, 2007 at Mankato Mortuary and will continue one hour before service at church on Tuesday. Memorials may be given to Grace Lutheran Church Hymnal Fund or American Bible Society.

Emelyn was born February 8, 1919 in Dawson, Minnesota to Hawkin and Cora (Swenson) Larson. Emelyn attended Dawson High School and was a graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College. She taught school in Walnut Grove, Chatfield, Gaylord, Excelsior, Good Thunder, and Mankato. She was employed with the Mankato School District for 26 years, teaching Elementary and Junior High Music. During her career, she continued her studies through the University of Washington in Seattle, the University of Minnesota, Mankato State Teacher's College, and the University of Alabama, where she received her Masters degree. Emelyn retired from teaching in 1977.

Emelyn was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and was active in Circle. She was involved with the Garden Club and Swedish Club. She loved to travel and loved her dogs, of which she had eight. Emelyn played the piano, organ, and other musical instruments. She enjoyed sports, including horseback riding, golfing, cross country skiing, roller and ice skating, and tennis. Other hobbies were Hardanger-Norwegian embroidery, knitting, and weaving.

Emelyn is survived by a sister, Carol (Richard) Weech of Lansdale, PA; nieces and nephews and their families including, Peggy (Eugene) Huerstel of Forest Lake, Karen (Mark) Bendell of Chaska, John (Cindy) Dainsberg of LaPorte, Stephen (LaDene) Weech of Park Rapids and many friends.

Emelyn was preceded in death by her parents and a sister and brother-in-law, Lorraine and Harold Dainsberg.
