After two years at St. Olaf College and a year working on the farm, he entered the U.S. Army and served in Italy and Austria until June 1946. Roy received a B.A. degree from St. Olaf in 1948 and a Master's degree from the University of Iowa in 1949. He was united in marriage to Betty Thomas on August 13, 1955 in What Cheer, IA. During his years in Mankato, Roy and Betty traveled extensively in the U.S. and Europe. They and their daughter Annette spent most of a year in Adelaide, Australia when he was granted a Fulbright lectureship at Flinders University. In the next 50 years, he produced five books and numerous articles and reviews in both scholarly and environmental publications. Roy was active in several academic organizations. A late interest in vernacular architecture led to several thousand color prints of round and polygonal barns, mills, and covered bridges in the U.S. Roy retired from MSU in 1990. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1993, but with treatment was able to remain active through 2005.
