Kathleen Neumont was born in Swissvale, on October 27, 1912 to Jeremiah (a native of County Cork, Ireland) and Margaret (Loftus), McCarthy. She grew up with her two sisters and three brothers in St. Anselm's parish and graduated from Swissvale High School in 1930. She then attended Indiana State Teachers College for two years and obtained her teachers certification. Kathleen taught sixth grade at McKinley Elementary School in Swissvale for six years.
On June 21 1940, she married William W. Neumont. They had two daughters, Marcia and Kathy. William died suddenly in 1945 and Kathleen went back to work, first as a Juvenile Court Probation officer under Judge Schram, and then as a teacher. While working full time and raising her daughters, she attended night school for six years at Duquesne University. She obtained her Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Education. She then taught at Regent Square, Wightman, and Swisshelm Park Schools in Pittsburgh and was a reading consultant for Churchill Area Schools. In 1964 she became an associate and then assistant Professor of Education at Duquesne University, teaching there for seventeen years and completing forty years of service to Education.
Her love of her ancestry and all things Irish, was a hallmark of her life which she passed on to the next generations. She loved singing and all kinds of music, horseracing, the theater, playing blackjack at the casinos, reading, Democratic politics, playing bridge, the Steelers and the Pirates, and most of all, her faith and her family. Her vivacity, strong opinions, sense of humor and love of life will be greatly missed.
Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Charles, James and Justin, sisters, Margaret (Sr. Ida Marie S.C.) and Marie Murray.
Kathleen is survived by her two daughters, Marcia (Harlan) Stapleton-Mehlhop, of Lake Washington, Kasota MN. and Kathy (Richard) Fishburn of Kiawah Island, S.C., five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, two nieces, and two nephews and extended family throughout the United States and Ireland.
