Mae Rose Hughes Kjos, age 89 of Lake Crystal, died Thursday, April 19, 2007 at Longhouse Residence in Spencer, IA.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 23, 2007 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Lake Crystal, with Rev. John Wilmot officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Alzheimers Research.
Mae was born on May 7, 1917 in rural Lake Crystal. She was the daughter of Christopher and Mary (Gappa) Hanson. Mae was a 1935 graduate of Lake Crystal High School. She then lived in Mankato and graduated from Mankato Commercial College. Mae was employed as a secretary for the Theodore Williams Insurance Agency until 1939. She was united in marriage to Russell Hughes on May 20, 1939. They lived in the Cambria area until 1946, when they purchased a farm in Lincoln Township, rural Lake Crystal. They built a new home in Lake Crystal in 1969. Mae was employed with Von Ohlens Rose Window for 14 years. Russell passed away in 1979. Mae married Allen Kjos in 1981 and they moved to North Mankato. They returned to Lake Crystal in 1986. Mae was an active member of Holy Family Catholic Church and Circle. She was also a member of the Lake Crystal Study Club, Blue Earth County Extension Club, and the Blue Earth County Historical Society. Mae volunteered at Immanuel-St. Josephs Hospital and its gift shop and also the Lake Crystal Health Care Center. She loved flowers, was a wonderful seamstress and cook, and enjoyed traveling with her husbands. Mae died two weeks short of her 90th birthday.
Mae is survived by her husband, Al of North Mankato; three daughters, Norma (James) Schlichter Driver of Northfield, Bonnie Hughes Falk of Grand Junction, CO, and Shirley (Lance) Selzer of Spencer, IA; three step-children, Konnie (Tom) George Brueck of LeSueur, Debra (Roger) Haar of Westbrook, and Doug Silliman of Odin; seven grandchildren, Greg (Jennifer), Brian (Michelle), and Jeffrey (Stacy) Schlichter, Scott (Corey) and Andrew Falk, Benjamin (Angie) and Nicole Selzer; seven step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; sister, Mathilda Fanning of Sioux Falls, SD; also many nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Russell; son-in-law, Gary Schlichter; sister, Leona Lloyd; and brother, Raymond Hanson Sr.
