She moved to Mankato at age 8 and attended Lutheran schools and graduated from Mankato High School. She studied to be a teacher at Mankato State Teachers College. On August 14, 1938, she married Kenneth Schostag of Mankato. Kenneth and Evelyn were active partners in running a century farm (est. 1855) south of Mankato for forty-nine years, and raising two sons, David and Randall.

She was active in Farm Bureau, Aid Association for Lutherans, County Extension, 4-H, Fifty Year Sewing Club, and was one of the founding members of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and Guild. She served as president of the Mankato Mrs. Jaycees. She also enjoyed dancing, playing cards with friends (Evelyn rarely lost), cooking, fishing with Kenneth, and spending time with family. She and Kenneth loved to travel and visited all fifty states, Mexico, and Europe. In her later years, Evelyn was active in Senior Citizens and Singles and Solos, as well as the activities at Sibley Manor Assisted Living and Oaklawn Health Care Center.
Evelyn is survived by her sons, David (Jane) of Mankato and Randall (Jill) of Golden Valley; grandchildren, Lindsay, Richard, and Joseph, all of the Twin Cities; sister, Lucille Buland of Mankato; nieces and nephews.
