Emmet M. Iverson, died on Sunday, May 15, 2011 at 7:00 a.m.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 20, 2011 at Christ the King Lutheran Church, Mankato with Rev. Steve Kidder and Rev. John Petersen officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. Burial with military honors will be at Minneopa Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to any Heart, Cancer, or Hospice foundation or to the donor's choice. Mankato Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Emmet was born in Butternut Valley Township in Blue Earth County on March 15, 1925 to Henry and Melia (Thompson) Iverson. He was baptized and confirmed at the Butternut Lutheran Church. He graduated from Lake Crystal High School in 1942.
During WWII Emmet served with the 91st Infantry Division in Italy as a squad leader and was awarded the Bronze Star for Heroic Achievement in combat, the Combat Infantry Badge, and the Mediterranean Operation Medal with three battle stars. He was honorably discharged in December of 1945.
Emmet was united in marriage to LaVonne Leland on July 17, 1949 at the Bricelyn Lutheran Church in Bricelyn, MN.
In succeeding years Emmet took "on the job" training in the Petroleum Equipment field. He moved to Hopkins, MN in 1956 and spent 15 years with Continental (Conoco) Oil Co. as a manager of construction and maintenance. He spent 10 years as a sales representative for various equipment companies. In 1974, Emmet and his family moved to Mankato where he and a partner purchased Zahl Equipment Co. In 1981 he bought out his partner and operated the business until retiring in 1988 due to ill health.
Emmet served on the church council and various committees at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Hopkins and Christ the King Lutheran Church in Mankato. He was an usher for over 40 years. Emmet was a charter member and past President of the AM Exchange Club, and a member of the American Legion and a life member of the V.F.W.
Emmet is survived by his wife of 62 years, LaVonne of Mankato; daughter, Diane (Roger) Giese of Caledonia, MN; sons, Bruce of Shakopee and David (Melissa) of Lonsdale, MN; four grandchildren, Dan (Jessica) Giese of Alparetta, GA, Kristy Giese of Blaine, and Austin and Emma Iverson of Lonsdale; brother, Glenn (Pat) of Elk Grove, CA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Herb (Carolyn) Kraus of Lake Crystal, Gene (LaVonne) Leland of Kiester, and Roger (Kay) Leland of Fairway, KS; and three nieces and eleven nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Lorraine (Wallace) Russell, and a number of aunts, uncles, and cousins.
