George Wayne Wangen, age 78, of Mankato, died Saturday, April 30, 2011 at his home.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 6, 2011 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Mankato with Rev. Paul Lauer officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Hills Memorial Park in Mankato. Visitation will be held from 4 " 7 p.m., Thursday at Mankato Mortuary and continue one hour before the service at the church on Friday. Memorials may be given to Our Savior's Lutheran Church, ISJ Hospice, or the donor's choice.
George Wayne Wangen was born June 2, 1932 to Elvin and Marie (Kallestad) Wangen on the family farm near Bricelyn, Minnesota. George was the third child of five having one sister and three brothers. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended high school in Blue Earth and then enlisted in the US Army and served during the Korean Conflict with the rank of Sergeant. He was honorably discharged in 1954. George was united in marriage to Arlene Ann Gellert on March 9, 1956. George graduated from the Minnesota School of Business in December of 1956 in Minneapolis. They moved to Mankato following his schooling. George was then hired by Sears where he worked for 35 years before retiring in 1992. George and Arlene were blessed with three children.
George was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church since 1957, Life Member of American Legion Post #11 and the DAV (Disabled American Veterans). His priority was family, work and God. He also enjoyed fishing, golfing, watching sports, swimming, walking out doors and was an aspiring artist. He loved music, anything outdoors and being with his family whom he loved dearly. He enjoyed old cars (he has a 1951 Ford Victoria) and loved hunting for rocks.
George is survived by his wife, Arlene of Mankato; three children, Pamela (John) Rau of Sarona, WI, Kevin Wangen of Buffalo, MN, Cheryl Wangen Wenzlau of North Mankato; five grandchildren, Jeremiah, Alyssa, Nathaniel Rau, Dylan Wenzlau, and Lucas Wangen; sister, Lola Handahl of Austin, MN; two brothers, James Wangen of St. Paul, Abdiel "Skip" Wangen of Blue Earth; nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Gene.
