Arlene Ione Marx, age 76, of St. Peter, died Thursday, April 14, 2011 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis.
Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, April 18, 2011 at Centenary United Methodist Church, Mankato, with Rev. Dean Wolf officiating. Visitation will be one hour before service at church on Monday and will continue following the service. Mankato Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Arlene was born July 25, 1934 to Arthur and Lillian (Bakken) Bergjord in Glencoe, MN. In 1946, at age 11, she contracted polio which affected her back and both legs. Through rehabilitation and determination, she walked out of the hospital. She was confirmed in 1948 and graduated from Glencoe High School " Stevens Seminary in 1952. She graduated from the University of Minnesota with a B.S. degree in Education in 1961. She taught in Morris, St. Peter, and at Franklin Jr. High School in Mankato until 1970. She married Cliff Marx on December 17, 1966 in Robbinsdale, together they raised two children. Arlene continued with substitute teaching in the area and also worked for the St. Peter Herald, American Family Insurance, and did house cleaning for Mankato area residents. Arlene volunteered with the St. Peter Thrift Store and enjoyed sewing, cooking, collecting recipes, playing cards, and gathering with friends.
Arlene is survived by her two children, Jennifer (Christopher) Harbo of St. Peter, Jon (Kelly) Marx of Winnebago; three grandchildren, Ingrid, Torin, and Anja Harbo; former husband, Cliff Marx of Winnebago; sister, Audrey (Harry) Harris of St. Louis Park; sister-in-law, Beth Bergjord of Maple Grove; two nieces, Nancy (Marc) Juaire and Laura Bergjord.
Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Lois; and brother, Art.
