Verne Clarence Preis, 74, of rural Good Thunder, died Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at Hillcrest Health Care Center, Mankato after a courageous four month battle with cancer.
Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, April 17, 2011 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Rapidan. Visitation will be held from 5:30-8:30 p.m., Saturday at Mankato Mortuary and will continue one hour before service at church on Sunday. Burial will be in Kern's Oak Grove Cemetery, Belgrade Township, Nicollet County.
Verne was born February 28, 1937 to Clarence H. and Pearl Alberta (Blume) Preis in Beauford Township, Blue Earth County. Verne was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church, Good Thunder and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church, Rapidan. He graduated from Rapidan High School in1954. He served with the National Guard and was honorably discharged in 1962. Verne was united in marriage to Judith J. Cole on November 18, 1961 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Rapidan. Verne and Judy rented the Blue Earth County Poor Farm, south of Mankato until they purchased a farm in Rapidan Township. Verne was a proud farmer and he farmed all of his life. He operated a dairy farm until 1994 and continued with crops and steers until the present. While he was farming, he concurrently worked at several jobs; Superior Concrete for 7 years, road maintenance for Rapidan Township for 12 years. He umpired softball for 12 years and from 1993-2008 drove belly dump trucks for Myles Lorentz Construction. Verne enjoyed making people smile with his many jokes, played softball, old time dancing, playing cards, and spending time with family and friends. He will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and his love of laughter.
Verne is survived by his son, Mitchell (Margaret Ko) Preis of Good Thunder; two grandchildren, Matthew and Samuel; two sisters, Helen Boese of Morristown and Lorene Mann of St. Peter; brother-in-law, Gene (Leora) Cole of North Mankato; special friend, Roberta Naylor Schuster; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Verne was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Judy on June 9, 2009; brother, Eldon in 1961; and two brothers-in-law, Paul Mann and Wayne Boese.
