Lowell W. Andreas, age 87, died Saturday, April 4, 2009 at his Mankato home.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church in Mankato. Pastor John Anderson, from Bay Presbyterian Church in Bonita Springs, FL, will officiate the service. Private burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery. There will be a reception and a time to visit immediately following the service in the Alltel Center Banquet Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Andreas Cancer Center at Immanuel-St. Joseph's Hospital. Mankato Mortuary is handling arrangements.
Lowell Willard Andreas was born February 24, 1922 in Lisbon, Iowa to R.P. and Lydia (Schultz) Andreas. He was a graduate from Lisbon High School, started at Wheaton College and attended the University of Iowa. He served in the US Army during World War II and after being honorably discharged, Lowell returned to the family turkey feed business and became a loss adjuster for the family-owned turkey insurance company. In 1947, Lowell and his brother, Dwayne, purchased a soybean plant in Mankato, which became known as Honeymead. In the mid 60's, they sold the business to Farmer's Union Grain Terminal Association, now known as CHS. In 1964 Lowell and Dwayne chartered a bank, which became National City Bank of Minneapolis. In 1968, Lowell and Dwayne invested in Archer Daniels Midland Company, and Lowell later became President of ADM and served as director emeritus after his retirement in 1973.
On May 30, 1943, Lowell was united in marriage to Nadine Betty Hamilton, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They raised two children, Pamela and David. His family and community devotion was evident by his support of Minnesota State University in the theatrical department, observatory, and the Nadine Andreas Endowment for Arts and Humanities, serving on the boards of Mankato Citizens Telephone Company and Kayot Corporation, involvement with the YMCA and his church, support of the ISJ cancer center, and serving on various business and charitable organization boards.
Lowell was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Nadine; daughter, Pamela Andreas Lee Stisser; three brothers, Osborn, Albert and Glenn; and a sister, Lenore Andreas Steele.
Lowell is survived by his son, David Andreas and his wife, Debra of Golden Valley; five grandchildren, Andreas Lee and his wife, Laura, Cayman Lee Campbell and her husband, Casey, Jason Delane Lee and his wife, Yvonne Huff Lee, Genevieve Andreas, and Jacob Andreas; five great-grandchildren, Charlotte Lee, Beatrice Lee, Lucy Campbell, Sadie Campbell, and Fredrick Campbell; brother, Dwayne Andreas and his wife, Inez of Decatur, IL; many nieces and nephews.
