Esther Lucille Lang, age 94, of Roseau, MN and formerly of Mankato, died Sunday, March 1, 2009, at LifeCare Medical Center.

Funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Hilltop Methodist Church, Mankato, MN. Burial will be in Tivoli Cemetery, rural Mankato. Visitation will be two hours before the service. Mankato Mortuary is in charge of local arrangements. A visitation will be on Wednesday, March 4th from 3-6 PM at Helgeson Funeral Home in Roseau. Memorials may be given to Susan G. Komen breast cancer research or to Hilltop Methodist Church building fund or the Tivoli Cemetery Care Fund.

Esther Lucille Lang, the daughter of Eltie and Katie Karstens, was born on October 26, 1914, in Mankato. She attended school in Mankato, graduating in 1932. She then attended Mankato State Teachers College, graduating with a degree in upper elementary education. She taught school at Dickerson School Dist. 53 for 2 years before she married Harold M. Lang on Sept. 17, 1936. They lived on a farm east of Mankato.

She was a longtime member of Hilltop Methodist Church. Making peanut brittle for the annual bazaar and sharing garden flowers with the congregation were her favorite contributions. She was also a member of Eastern Star, where she received a 50 year pin, and the White Shrine. She held many offices in both organizations. One of her favorite pastimes was playing cards. U Need a Rest was one of the card clubs to which she belonged. She looked forward to family fishing trips in the summer and thoroughly enjoyed being a grandmother and great grandmother.

Esther is survived by her son, Harold "Bud" (Elaine) of Badger, MN, son-in-law, Dennis Thorsen of St. Peter; grandchildren Rich Lang of Roseau, MN, Mitch Lang of Jamestown, ND, Harold "Tony" (Kelly) Lang of Farmington, Stephanie Lang of Bonney Lake, WA, Amy (Jay) Voorhees of Rosemount, Bobbi Jo (Chris) Kubiaczyk of Portland, OR, Kari Thorsen (fianc" Greg Patenaude) of Seattle, WA, and Kate Thorsen (fianc" Ben Sandvik) of St. Paul; great grandchildren, Justin, Grace, and Matthew Voorhees and Ava, Elle, and Ana Kubiaczyk; two nieces and two nephews.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Judy Thorsen; and brother Harold Karstens.
