Lenus moved to Mankato when he was five years old and graduated from Mankato High School in 1933. His grandfather was a carpenter and delighted in teaching Lenus carpentry which was a joy to him all his life and resulted in him building many pieces of furniture and several houses he lived in. Lenus father was a union bricklayer and taught him the bricklaying trade- Lenus received his journeymans union card in 1940. After graduating high school he attended the Dunwoody Technical Institute in Minneapolis to become a machinist for the Kato Engineering Company.
He worked as a machinist and a bricklayer for most of his life and worked on many large projects including the Benedictine Motherhouse (Assisi Heights) in Rochester, MN and Mankato West High School as well as air-base complexes in Montana, North Dakota and Duluth, MN. After getting married they lived in trailer homes while Lenus traveled to and from construction jobs in Texas, Minnesota, Montana, California, and North Dakota. He finished building their permanent home at 332 Dolph Road in 1951. Gladys died after a long battle with cancer in April 1985.
Lenus enjoyed hunting, fishing, canoeing and sailing. One of his greatest pleasures was flying and he received his pilots license in the 1950s. He remarried in May 1986 to Vera Ballman Tuberg. They enjoyed spending time with their friends on Dolph Road as well as many other long-time Mankato friends.
