Albert F. Vogel, age 77, of Mankato died Saturday, February 24, 2007 at Immanuel-St. Josephs Hospital, Mankato.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 1, 2007 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Mankato with Rev. Richard Colletti and Rev. Francis Kunz officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Calvary Cemetery, Walnut Grove. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday at Mankato Mortuary with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service and will continue one hour before service on Thursday at church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church or the St. Paul Benedictine Monastery.
Albert was born March 30, 1929 to Albert W. and Frances (Stadtmiller) Vogel in Greensburg, Indiana. He graduated from Greensburg High School in 1947. Albert served in the United States Navy from 1950-1954. He was stationed on two different aircraft carriers the USS Antietam and the USS Princeton. He achieved the rank of A-M2 and was discharged on September 17, 1954 in Moffet Field, California. He was united in marriage to Mary Ann Matter on June 25, 1955 at St. Pauls Catholic Church in Walnut Grove, Minnesota. Albert and Mary Ann lived in Terre Haute, Indiana from 1955-1958. During that time Albert attended the Indiana State Teachers College where he received his BS in Business Administration. From 1958 to 1960 the couple resided in Green Bay, WI and from 1960-1967 they lived in Alexandria, Minnesota. They moved to Mankato in 1967 where they raised their family.
Albert was a salesman for Sinclair Oil and after that was the plant manager of the fertilizer division of Standard Oil in Mankato. He worked for Atwood Smith Real Estate. JLCO Grain Dryers, and Simes Grain Bins and Jacks as a regional sales manager. During retirement he operated Vogel Shaver and Repair Clinics throughout southern Minnesota.
During his college years, Albert was a member of the Newman Club on the local, state, and national levels. He was a member of the Jaycees during his time in Green Bay and Alexandria. After moving to Mankato, Albert joined the Knights of Columbus and the Hilltop Kiwanis club where he served as treasurer. Albert also served on the Mankato Planning Commission and ran for city council. As a member of St. Johns he was an Eucharistic Minister and in the Mens Club. Albert volunteered and supported other clubs including Campfire Girls, 4H, and Mankato Area 77 Lancers.
Albert enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting, camping, gardening and playing bridge. In his later years he very much enjoyed the USS Antietam Reunions, road trips, family reunions, going out to coffee and spending time with his family and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann of Mankato; children, Lynn (Mark) Turbes of Mankato, Diane (Kevin) McKelvey of Ashland, OR, and Nanette (Sam) McCaa of Minneapolis; grandchildren, Sarah, Mathias and Tobias Turbes, Morgan, Logan, and Kelsey McKelvey, Gabrielle and Taylor McCaa; three sisters, Esther Geers of Cincinnati, OH, Ruth (George) Barter of Shawnee, KS, and Janet (Richard) Scholl of Menlo Park, CA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Irene Vogel of Spokane, WA, Joe Gallagher of Indianapolis, IN, Raymond Matter of St. Paul, Dorothy DeSmith of Walnut Grove, and Virginia Matter, OSB of St. Paul; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Albert was preceded in death by his parents; mother and father-in-law, August and Luverna (Meyer) Matter; sister, Mary Louise Gallagher; brother, Maurice Vogel; two brother-in-laws, Jack Geers and Ed DeSmith; and sister-in-law, June Matter.
