Marlow Shorty A. Jovaag, age 91 of Mankato, died Sunday evening February 18, 2007, at his home in Mankato.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday February 21, 2007 at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Mankato with Rev. John Petersen officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Mankato. Visitation will be held from 5 -7 p.m., Tuesday (TODAY) at Christ the King Lutheran Church. Mankato Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Marlow A. Jovaag was born June 30, 1915 to Halmick A. and Olise (Rongstad) Jovaag in Kenyon, MN. The family moved to Mankato in 1919. He attended school in Mankato, Minneapolis and in St. Louis, MS where he graduated from High School in 1934. He served the Government in Civilian Conservation Corp. in Arkansas following graduation and then returned to Mankato and then to Oshkosh, WI. He served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II flying missions over Germany and the occupied countries of Europe. He was an Armorer Gunner on a B-24 Liberator. His missions earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, a Campaign Ribbon with four Battle Stars. After separation from the service in 1945 he married Sadie Haskins at the Little Brown Church in the Vale, Nashua, Iowa in 1946. He joined the Mankato Fire Department in 1948 until his retirement in 1977. He and his wife are charter members of Christ the King Lutheran Church and have served the church in many areas including the Church Council, Church School Committees and Bible Study Groups. He is also a member of VFW Post # 950 and American Legion Post # 11. Shorty enjoyed golf, guitar, woodworking, and his grandchildrens sporting events. He also volunteered his time with Hilltoppers.
Marlow is survived by his son, Bob (Linda) Jovaag of Chaska; daughter, Mary Ann Jovaag-Wolle of Mankato; five grandchildren, Jennifer Lynn Jovaag Zarn and husband, John, Jeffrey Scott (Missy) Jovaag, Mike Wolle and wife, Becky Schultz, Kristina Wolle, Bryan Wolle; six great-grandchildren, Parker, Madysen, and Quincy Zarn, Kjerstin, Andrew, Rachel Jovaag; brother, John and Dorothy Jovaag of St. Louis; nieces, nephews.
Preceded in death by his wife, Sadie in 2001; two sisters, seven brothers.
