Nina Augusta Sween, age 100, of Mankato died Saturday, February 17, 2007 at Mankato Lutheran Home.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 3, 2007 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mankato. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Mankato Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
Nina Augusta Sween was born August 9, 1906 in Rio, Wisconsin to John and Pernille (Matson) Cleberg. She graduated in 1928 from the University of Wisconsin School of Nursing's 2nd class. On September 12, 1935 she married Maurice A. Sween in Covington, KY. They lived in Ohio, West Virginia, Missouri, and South Dakota, and then in 1953, made their home in Mankato. Nina did many years of private duty nursing and then worked at Immanuel Hospital in Mankato until she retired in 1971. She dedicated her life to caring for others, not only in her career, but also in her personal life and was always helping those in need. Holding a special place in her heart were her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Nina was very active and fun-loving throughout her life. Over the years, she enjoyed crafts, bridge, travel, church activities, ballroom dancing, and volunteering. She especially enjoyed her years at Old Main Village, participating in the many activities there. Nina was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
She will be greatly missed by her three sons, James (Sandy) Sween of Avon Park, FL, Al (Kathryn) Sween of Mankato, and Adrian (Susan) Sween of Stillwater; two daughters-in-law, Mary Sween of Rapidan and Joyce Sween of Highland Park, IL; five grandchildren, Terri Sween, Maurie (Lan-Shiang) Sween, Michelle (Dennis) Schock, Stephen (Darline) Sween, and Sara (Mark) Godfrey; three great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Schock, Charlie Sween, and Christopher Sween; one sister-in-law, Hilary Sween of Huntington Beach, CA; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Maurice in 1957; one grandson, Jim Sween; four brothers and four sisters.
Special thanks from Nina's family to the staff at the Mankato Lutheran Home for their caring hearts. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. The family will be establishing a scholarship trust for nursing students.
