Del D. Smith, age 55, of North Mankato, died peacefully in his wife's arms and surrounded by his children on Saturday, February 28, 2009 at Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato following a ten year battle with cancer.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in North Mankato, with Rev. Peter Nosbush officiating. Burial will be in Kern's Oak Grove Cemetery in rural North Mankato. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday at Mankato Mortuary, and continues one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
Del was born on November 9, 1953 in Mankato. He was the son of Robert and Ruth (Kump) Smith. Del was a 1972 graduate of Mankato High School and attended Mankato VoTech to study Machinist Tool & Die for two years. He was united in marriage to Valerie Goodrich on August 23, 1975 in Mankato. Del worked in Tool & Die for various locations before becoming a tax advisor for H&R Block in Mankato in 1981. He purchased the Mankato H&R Block franchise in 1998 and later added locations in Redwood Falls and North Mankato. Del was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in North Mankato and was a 3rd and 4th degree of the Knights of Columbus 5551. He also was a member of the Mankato Chamber of Commerce, National Tax Preparers Association, Mankato Moose Lodge, NRA, MN Deer Hunters Association, and the Kern's Oak Grove Cemetery Association. Del enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming, softball, and volunteering his time helping others. He was a proud sponsor of the Mankato Moon Dogs and MAYBA.
Del is survived by his wife, Valerie of North Mankato; three children, Katie Smith and her fianc", Bryan Lempkie of Mapleton, Scott Smith, and Brady Smith, both of North Mankato; six grandchildren, Taber, Joshua, Dalen, Ava, Chloe, and Kalyn; father, Robert Smith of North Mankato; three brothers, Duane (Marna) Smith of Anoka, Arnie Smith of North Mankato, and Ray (Ona) Smith of Nicollet; one sister, Marilyn (Pat) Biedscheid of Mankato; also many nieces and nephews.
Del was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth; step-mother, Millie; and sister-in-law, Patti Smith.
