David C. Saar, age 71, of North Mankato, died Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN.
A Celebration of Dave's Life will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at Hosanna Lutheran Church in Mankato with Rev. Steve Kosberg officiating. Burial will be in Tivoli Cemetery, rural Mankato. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Monday at Mankato Mortuary and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred and will be used for area youth programs.
David Charles Saar was born July 16, 1937 in Fargo, ND to Elmer and Lydia (Plackner) Saar. He was a 1955 high school graduate of Casselton, ND. He attended Concordia College in Moorhead and graduated from Brown Institute of Broadcasting in Minneapolis. He was also a member of the Minnesota National Guard. On February 25, 1961, he was united in marriage to Ruth Ann Mills in Odessa, MN and later made their home in Moorhead.
Dave was employed in radio in Albany, MN, Stevens Point, WI, Ortonville, MN, Minot and Fargo, ND, and from 1962-1968 was employed at KYSM Radio in Mankato. Dave was employed at Paper Service in Mankato for many years and was most currently employed with Quest Marketing in Mankato.
Dave was a past president of the Mankato Area Jaycee's, where he had been very involved, held numerous offices, and received the JCI Senator Award. He was also very devoted to the community being involved in the Chamber for many years, serving as an Ambassador and Cavalier. He was awarded the North Central Conference "MSU-Volunteer of the Year" and was known as the "Voice of the Mavericks". Dave was a longtime Public Address Announcer for MSU Football, Basketball, and Volleyball; Bethany Basketball and Volleyball; Mankato West Boys and Girls Hockey. Dave had been involved for many years in the Amateur Softball Association of America playing softball and umpiring. He currently held the position of Umpire-in-Chief in Mankato. Dave was a lifelong member of Goshen Moravian Church, Durban, North Dakota.
Survivors include his wife, Ann of North Mankato; daughters, Tracy (Ron) Rauchman of North Mankato, Tammy Davis of North Mankato; son, Terry (Tamera) Saar of Eagle Lake; six grandchildren, Tawna Postel, Danielle Davis, Eric and Emily Rauchman, Caleb and Caden Saar; great-granddaughter, Alyvia Rose; sister, Marlene Saar of Fargo, ND; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Georgia Curtis.
