Sister M. Hermana Maurer, School Sister of Notre Dame, died Saturday, February 3, at Good Counsel Convent, Mankato, Minnesota, at age 97. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 6, at 10:30 a.m. in Good Counsel Chapel with Father Ted Hottinger, SJ, as celebrant. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday at Good Counsel, with Vespers in the chapel at 7:00 p.m. Visitation is also one hour prior to the funeral on Tuesday. Mankato Mortuary is in charge.
Sister M. Hermana (Alvera Maurer) was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, August 9, 1909, to Herman and Mary Magdalen (Neid) Maurer. She entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame in Mankato in 1926 and took First Vows in 1929. Having earned a Bachelor of Music Degree from MacPhail College of Music, Minneapolis, and a Master of Music Degree from Minneapolis College of Music, she was a musician for over 60 years, as organist, choir director and music teacher. In the Mankato area, she served at Good Counsel Academy and the Motherhouse, at SS. Peter & Pauls, at Holy Rosary in North Mankato, in St. Peter, and in Madelia. She retired to Good Counsel in 2000. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
