Mankato resident, Wilfred M. Bill Witz, age 84 died Sunday, January 21, 2007 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 27, 2007 at Centenary United Methodist Church with Rev. Dean Wolf and Rev. Pam Serdar, officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. There will be a time to visit with the family from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Saturday. Mankato Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Centenary United Methodist Church or an organization of the donors choice.

Wilfred was born December 19, 1922 in Manilla, Indiana to Henry L. and Sara Ann (Miller) Witz. In 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and was honorably discharged on June 9, 1944 as an Aviation Cadet. Bill reenlisted on June 10, 1944 and served in the European Theater. He was honorably discharged in 1945, after serving as First Lieutenant with 35 missions over Germany. Bill received his Bachelors and Masters degrees from Purdue University in Animal Nutrition.

On June 14, 1947, he was united in marriage to Mary Jane Janie Foerst in Indianapolis, IN. They moved to the Minneapolis area in 1949 where Bill worked for Archer Daniels Midland. They moved to the Mankato area in 1960. Bill was the Director of Research at Hubbard Milling Company, and later owned Wisco Milling Company in Menominee, WI. He retired in 1987.

Bill was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Mankato, where he served on numerous boards and committees and took special care of the flower beds. Bill served on the Mankato City Council from 1964-68, and on the Board of Review for more than 35 years. Bill worked on several Habitat for Humanity Projects and volunteered at the Mankato Lutheran Home. He also volunteered with the International Executive Service Corps as an agricultural consultant in Malawi, Africa and with VOSH in an eye clinic in Camargo, Mexico.

Bill is survived by his loving wife, Janie of Mankato; three children, Cynthia and husband, Dr. Barry Press of Saratoga, CA, Steven and wife, Barb Witz of Lafayette, IN and Ann Hiniker of Rochester, MN; six grandchildren, Sarah Press, Rachel Press, Katie Mendel and husband, Danny, Brian Witz, Emily Hiniker, Kristine Hiniker; sister, Carolyn LaVanchy of Indianapolis, IN; nieces and nephews.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and a brother.
