Selma Lorna Thorstad, age 97, of Mankato and formerly of Butternut, died Friday, January 12, 2007 at the Mankato Lutheran Home.
Funeral service 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at Our Saviours Lutheran Church, Butternut, with Rev. Gene Alms and Rev. Donohue Sarff officiating. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Hanska. Visitation will be one hour before service on Tuesday. Memorials may be given to the Mankato Lutheran Home or an organization of the donors choice. Lake Crystal Mortuary in charge of arrangements.
Selma was born September 30, 1909 to Carl J. and Ida O. (Ahlness) Christenson in Riverdale Township, Watonwan County, MN. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madelia. She graduated from Madelia High School in 1927. Selma was united in marriage to Arnold Asleson on May 5, 1927, he died in July 1947. She later married Lonnie Thorstad on August 28, 1956, he died in May 1991. She was a homemaker and farm wife for her family. Selma was active in her churches, Trinity Lutheran in Madelia and Our Saviours Lutheran in Butternut, and in later years she was a member of Christ the King in Mankato. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the Luther Memorial Auxiliary. She enjoyed doing hardanger, traveling, gardening, she loved to entertain and cook. She will be remembered by her family as being very talented in writing, being proud of her family and Norwegian Heritage, and teaching her family faith and family tradition.
Survived by four children, Arden (Dorothy) Asleson of New Hope, MN, Allan (Virginia) Asleson of Madison Lake, David (Thelma) Asleson of Madison Lake, Sharon (Lowell) Kutches of Andover; three step-children, Eda (Ralph) Engles of rural Lake Crystal, Myron Thorstad and special friend, Marie of Graham, TX, Thelma (David) Asleson of Madison Lake; 23 grandchildren and step-grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law Theoris (Loren) Johnson of Madelia, Thelma Asleson of Hanska; many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by her parents; sister, Carol; two brothers, Orin and John; two husbands, infant daughter, Shirley Ann; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
