Robert Schweppe

Robert G. Schweppe, age 88, of Mankato, died Monday, January 1, 2007 at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Mankato.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 6, 2007 at Mankato Mortuary, with Rev. Randy Koppen officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the mortuary. Burial with military honors will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Mankato.

Robert was born December 10, 1918 in St. James. He was the son of Fred and Sophia (Kogge) Schweppe. Robert was a graduate of St. James High School and furthered his education at Gustavus Adolphus College and Mankato State University. In 1942, WWII interrupted his life and he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a communications personnel officer. After some harrowing close calls, Robert came home to marry his sweetheart, Geraldine Meinzer on October 15, 1943 in Mankato. He went back to serve his country and was honorably discharged on December 6, 1945. Robert received his Masters Degree in Ed. Administration and Ed. Psychology from the University of Minnesota. Robert was employed as a teacher and Principal at St. Clair, Morgan, and Jordan High Schools. He was Superintendent at Ceylon, which is where he would retire in 1979. Robert and Geraldine then moved to Mankato to help her aging mother. When she passed away, they moved into a home of their own to enjoy retirement. Later they moved into Laurels Edge until the past year when he began residing at Hillcrest Health Care Center. Robert loved classical music, bird watching, and was an avid reader, hunter, and fisherman. He and Geraldine were faithful members of Hilltop United Methodist Church in Mankato and enthusiastic supporters of Gustavus Adolphus, Billy Graham, and the Mankato Public Library.

Robert is survived by his wife, Geraldine of Mankato; also nephews and nieces, Oscar and Pat Olson of Madelia, Joan and Claude Dorminey of Tifton, GA, and John and Julia Theissen of Ramona, CA; great nephews and nieces, Michael and Judith Olson, Kathy and Steve Quiring, Becky and Dan Quittem, Lisa Olson and Mark Weber, Cynthia Dorminey, Jason and Shannon Dorminey, Jan and Jarod Heiner, Carina Theissen, and Christopher Theissen; also many great-great nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Vera Theissen.
