Leila K. Sowers, age 98, of Mapleton and formerly of Vernon Center died Sunday, November 19, 2006 at the Mapleton Community Home.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at Grace United Methodist Church, Vernon Center, with Rev. Wanda Kothlow officiating. Burial will be in Vernon Center Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before service at church on Wednesday. Lake Crystal Mortuary in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be given to Grace United Methodist Church.
Leila was born May 24, 1908 to Robert and Mayme (Townsend) Sowers in Vernon Center. Leila graduated from Garden City High School in 1926 and from Mankato Teachers College in 1945. She taught 1st and 2nd Grade in Brewster, Brownsdale, Lake Crystal, and Cannon Falls before retiring. Leila was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where she had served as a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, member of church circle, and WSC. She was also a member of Blue Earth County Extension Club and We Try Garden Club of Garden City. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, and baking, especially cookies. Leila moved to Country Neighbors in Mapleton in 1995 and to the Mapleton Community Home in September of 2006
Leila is survived by two sisters, Irene Forus of Waconia, and Peggy (Charles) Fleming of Garden City; 14 nieces and nephews; 22 great nieces and nephews; many great-great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Sumner and Roland; and two sisters, Helen and Effie.
