George L. Weckman, age 76, of Mankato, died Friday, November 10, 2006 at his home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 14, 2006 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Mankato, with Rev. Richard Colletti, Rev. Francis Kunz, and Rev. Brian Sutton officiating. Interment with military honors will be in Calvary Cemetery in Mankato. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. on Monday at Mankato Mortuary, with a 7 p.m. rosary service. Visitation continues one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Birthright or ISJ Hospice.
George was born on July 20, 1930 in Mankato. He was the son of George C. and Eleanor (Schneider) Weckman. George attended SS. Peter and Pauls Grade School and graduated from Loyola High School in 1948. He joined the National Guard in 1947, and was called to serve in the U.S. Army on Jan. 16, 1951 during the Korean War. While serving in the National Guard, George attended Mankato State University and graduated in 1956. He was united in marriage to Mary Anderson on July 2, 1955 at Mater Dolarosa Catholic Church in Delavan. Together they raised six children. George was employed with the Mankato Free Press for 25 years, starting in 1956 as an advertising salesman and was advertising director. He served on the board of directors for the International Daily Newspaper, and chairman of the agriculture committee. George was known for his creative ideas, and created the Foundry Collection, which were sold as gift items to agriculture companies. He retired in July of this year as salesman for Promotions 2000.
Those who knew George enjoyed his sense of humor and generosity. His most favorite pastimes were fishing with his family, hunting with friends at the Quack Shack Swan Lake, and gardening.
George is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary; four sons, Peter (Joan) of Ely, MN, Paul and (Penny) of Washington D.C., John (Deb) of Willmar, MN, Nicholas (Marla) of Cass Lake, MN; two daughters, Ann (Joe) Folz of Ely, MN, Maria (Kevin) Kennedy of San Antonio, TX; 13 grandchildren; one sister, Harriet Korth of White Bear Lake, MN; one sister-in-law, Elizabeth Hartle of Seattle, WA; nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother-in-law, Leo Korth.
