Russell A. Hanson, age 59 of Mankato, died Friday, October 13, 2006 in rural Sherburn, Minnesota as the result of an automobile accident.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 17, 2006 at Centenary United Methodist Church in Mankato with Rev. Dean Wolf and Rev. Pam Serdar officiating. Burial will be at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday in the Sherburn Cemetery in Sherburn, MN. Visitation will be held from 4 " 8 p.m., Monday at Mankato Mortuary and one hour before services at the church on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Centenary United Methodist Church in Mankato.
He was born June 17, 1947, in Fairmont, Minnesota to Harold and Ann (Prochniak) Hanson. Russell graduated from Sherburn High School in 1965, enlisted in the navy, and was honorably discharged in 1969. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Arts from Mankato State University in 1973.
Russell married Carol Ann Berger of Le Center, Minnesota, on June 20, 1970.
He taught twenty-nine years in the Mankato Public School system with a three-year stint in Maynard, Minnesota. He coached high school wrestling for twenty five years. He was a strong advocate for public education and served in union leadership roles for nearly twenty years including President of the Mankato Teachers Association until his retirement June 5, 2006.
Throughout his life he enjoyed high school and college wrestling, 4-H, showing registered holsteins at the Martin County Fair, fishing, watching television, tending to his many gardens, and just being at The Lake in Sherburn, Minnesota.
Russell is survived by his wife, Carol; sons, Kirby (Lisa) of Red Wing, MN, Tony, (fianc Teresa Best) of Salem, MA, and Julio Alaniz of Minneapolis; three granddaughters, Carolyn, Jackie, and Natalie Hanson; his father, Harold & step-mother, Thais Hanson of Seattle, WA; siblings, Melanie (Wayne) Ternes of Greenville, SC, Kenneth Hanson and Arden (Signe) Hanson all of Sherburn, MN; mother-in-law, Helen Berger of Le Center, MN; sister-in-law, Mary Jo McKenzie of Montgomery, MN; brother-in-law, Bob Berger of Le Center MN; and aunts, uncles, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, father-in-law and two sisters-in-law.
