Betty Sue Young, age 64, died Monday, February 2, 2009 at Immanuel Saint Joseph's Hospital in Mankato.
Funeral Service will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, February 5, 2009 at Centenary United Methodist Church, Mankato. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 4, 2009 (TODAY) from 4 to 7 p.m. at Mankato Mortuary and one hour prior to the service at the Church Thursday. Burial will be at a later date in Rocky Zion Baptist Cemetery, Pell City, AL. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the family to be set up in a trust fund for her children.
Blessed to the union of Edward and Birtie Mae Young, Betty Young was born September 26, 1944 in Pell City, Alabama. There she was united with the Rocky Zion Missionary Baptist Church at an early age.
Betty attended and graduated from St. Clair County Training School. She furthered her education with a Bachelor's Degree, Master's and a certification from Tuskegee University. She continued her education with a Doctorate Degree from Virginia Tech University.
She provided services to humanity through employment with Greene County Extension office, Tuskegee Institute, Virginia Tech, Louisiana Southern, Mankato State University, and Zimbabwe University. Currently at Minnesota State, she taught in the Family Life & Child Development Area. She was a Co-Chair on the Presidents Commission of Diversity. Betty was awarded the Woman of Distinction from the YWCA in 2007, where she also served on the board for six years. Betty was also involved with the College Access Program (CAP) at Minnesota State University and the Mankato NAACP. Through her interest in diversity and equality, Betty has taught many young and old alike.
She is survived by her two sons, Tiahti and Terry Dion Young; siblings, Bertie "Faye" Jordan of Pell City, AL, Lynda Young of North Carolina, Lorenzo (Mary) Young of New Jersey, Edward (Willie Kate) Young of Iowa, and Terry (Wendy) Young of Pell City, AL nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents; Edward and Birtie Young, siblings; Mattie Louise Young of Pell City, Girtha Lee Gordon of New York, and Charles Eugene Young of Pell City.
