Eugene Nicholas (Gene) Friedrichs, 86, died peacefully on Saturday, January 24, in his Las Vegas home, after several months' illness with acute leukemia. He was surrounded by his loving wife and son at his passing.
Gene's wake will be at Mankato Mortuary, 1001 North Riverfront Drive, on Friday, February 6, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., and again at St. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church, on Saturday February 7, from 11 a.m. to 12 noon. His funeral Mass will be at St. Peter and Paul's, on February 7, at noon, with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery in Mankato, and then a luncheon in St. Peter and Paul's Lower Level.
Gene was born to William L. and Margaret Walport Friedrichs, in Mankato Township, on January 1, 1923. He attended Kennedy Bridge Elementary School in Mankato Township, then St. Clair High School. He served proudly in the United State Navy in World War II, then attended the University of Minnesota in the late 1940's, earning Bachelor's degrees in Electrical Engineering and Physics, with much additional work in Naval Studies. He married Bernadine McGrath at St. Peter and Paul's Church in 1951, and moved to the Twin Cities, serving as an aerospace engineer for Honeywell from the early 1950's through the mid-1980's. At Honeywell, he had the opportunity to work on guidance systems for America's Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo space programs.
After his retirement, in 1986, he enjoyed his hobbies of fishing, card playing, and travel. He moved to Las Vegas in 1993, but stayed in touch, as he did throughout his life, with Minnesota family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Richard, Bill, and Paul, and his sisters, Betty Friedrichs, Eleanor Jones, and Mary Walters. He is survived by his wife, Bernadine of Las Vegas; his son, Terry of West St. Paul; brother, Rudie of South St. Paul, sister-in-law, Velma Bunde of North Mankato; sister-in-law, Sally Friedrichs of St. Peter; sister-in-law, Mary Dennison of Fortuna, CA; and many nieces and nephews.
He will be greatly missed.
