Sister M. Elisabeth Johannes, School Sister of Notre Dame, age 96, died Monday, August 7, 2006, at Good Counsel Convent, Mankato, Minnesota.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, August 11, at 10:30 a.m. in Good Counsel Chapel, with Fr. Tim Biren as celebrant. Visitation is from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at Good Counsel, with Vespers in the chapel at 7:00 p.m. Visitation is also one hour prior to the funeral on Friday. Mankato Mortuary is in charge.
Sister M. Elisabeth (Florence Johannes) was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, January 29, 1910, to Mathias and Elizabeth (Megel) Johannes. She entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame in Mankato in 1929 and took First Vows in 1932. During her more than 40 years of teaching, she taught on both the elementary and high school levels in schools in Minnesota and North Dakota. For 25 of those years, she taught business courses at Good Counsel Academy, Mankato. At the same time, from 1960 to 1980, she served as Moderator of the Good Counsel Alumnae Association, keeping in touch with many of the graduates of the Academy. She also spent several years in Rome, working in the SSND Generalate and in the Office of the Vatican newspaper, LOsservatore Romano. Over those years she earned a B.E. in Education from Mount Mary College, Milwaukee, and a M.S. in Education from Creighton University, Omaha.
She was preceded in death by her parents, five sisters, and a brother.
