James J. "Jim" Schaffer, age 69, of Mankato, died Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at his residence following a five year battle with cancer.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 23, 2011 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Mankato, with Rev. John Kunz officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Mankato. Visitation will be 2-5 p.m. on Sunday at North Mankato Mortuary - NORTHVIEW, 2060 Commerce Drive, and continues one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Memorials are preferred to the San Lucas Toliman Mission in Guatemala or the MSU - Mankato Athletic Department.

Jim was born on February 21, 1942 in St. Paul to John and Ann (Regan) Schaffer. He was a 1960 graduate of New Ulm Cathedral High School. Jim attended Rochester Community College and received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from Mankato State University. He served in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1966 in Germany. Jim was united in marriage to Kathleen McCoy on June 14, 1969 in Mankato. Jim was employed with IBM, the Mankato YMCA, and was with the Mankato State University Athletic Department for 18 years. He and Kathleen also co-owned the Ironwood Golf Course and Restaurant. Jim retired in 2001 after suffering a stroke. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Jim enjoyed gardening, sports, especially racquetball, and antiques. He was voted into the New Ulm, NCAA, and MSU - Mankato's Athletic Halls of Fame.

Jim is survived by his wife, Kathleen Schaffer; three children, Scott (Micki) Schaffer, Ryan (Jen) Schaffer, and Brady Schaffer, all of Mankato; four grandchildren, Chelsea, Lindsey, Charleigh, and Eliana; three brothers, Monsignor Gregory Schaffer of Guatemala, J. Patrick (Rita) Schaffer of St. Paul, and John (Rosemary) Schaffer of Burnsville; five sisters, Elizabeth (Martin) Meidl of Lamberton, Geraldine Cunningham of Chicago, IL, Judith (Bob) Gust of Iowa City, IA, Ann Wiggins of Eagan, and Monica (Robert) Schwartz of Tucson, AZ; foster brother, Bob (Janice) O'Brien of Omaha, NE; also many nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Alice Lemmons; and a brother-in-law, Bob Wiggins.
