Leon E. Goebel, age87 of Mankato, died Friday, February 18, 2011 at Laurel's Edge Assisted Living in Mankato.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 24, 2011 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Fr. John Kunz officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at North Mankato Mortuary - Northview in North Mankato with a 7 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Leon Edward was born September 17, 1923 to Edward and Zita (O'Connor) Goebel in Mankato. He was raised on the family farm, farmed at the age of 15 with his brother, Richard, and ended his 67 year farming career at the age of 82. On September 22, 1952, Leon was united in marriage to Mary Frances Murphy at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. They were blessed with eleven children. Leon was a member of the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, a member of the A.S.C. Board and was a Supervisor for Mankato Township. He enjoyed playing softball, cards, ice fishing in Canada and his time socializing with friends during coffee hour. Leon also enjoyed spending time with the members of the American Legion. He loved to travel to places like Mexico, Vegas and Alaska. Leon loved his family and farming.
Leon is survived by his four sons: Randy, Wayne (Molly,) Ed and Tom, all of Mankato; six daughters: Mary Kay Furst of Mankato, Patty Imlay of Lake Crystal, Janet (Chris) Rodebaugh of WA, Debbie (John) Blackmer of Faribault, Diane Webber and Linda Drill of Shakopee; daughter-in-law, Ann Goebel of Estherville, IA; 30 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; brother, Jerome Goebel of FL; and many nieces and nephews.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Mary in 2002; son, Robert; son-in-law, James Imlay; brother, Richard; and sister Lenore Tweto.
