Darrell V. Lewis, age 87, of Mankato, died Sunday, June 25, 2006 at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Mankato. Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, June 29, 2006 at Mankato Mortuary, with Rev. Randy Koppen officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the mortuary. Memorials may be given to Hilltop United Methodist Church in Mankato.
Darrell was born on July 16, 1918 in Atlantic, IA. He was the son of Frank and Clara (Hess) Lewis. He was a graduate of Carroll High School in Carroll, IA. Darrell was united in marriage to Margaret Peg Palmer on March 14, 1942 in St. Paul. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in North Africa and India. He continued to serve his country in the Army National Guard, retiring as a Lt. Colonel. Darrell was a long time Mankato businessman, manager of Mankato Loan Co., and owner of Finneys Dry Cleaners. He was a member of Hilltop Methodist Church. Darrell also belonged to the Elks Lodge, where he was a past-Grand Exalted Ruler, and the American Legion, VFW, and was past-President of the Cree Point Town Home Association. He was an avid golfer, and also enjoyed history, reading, walking, and the outdoors. Darrell loved spending holidays with his granddaughter.
Darrell is survived by his wife, Margaret Peg Lewis residing in Boone, NC; two sons, Dr. Darrell V. Lewis Jr. and his wife, JoAnn of Durham, NC, and Robert F. Lewis of St. Paul; one granddaughter, Kristina Lewis and her husband, David Popoli of New Orleans, LA; one brother, Eugene Lewis of Dallas, TX; one sister, Modesta Eischeid of Omaha, NE; also many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gerald; and sister, Geraldine.
