Sheldon Nels Johnson, age 70, of Mankato died Tuesday, May 23, 2006 at Mankato House Health Care Center.

Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Christ the King Lutheran Church, Mankato, with Rev. Karl Rydholm officiating. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Mankato Mortuary. There will also be a time to visit with the family immediately following the service at church on Friday. Memorials may be given to the ISJ-MHS Foundation Medical Oncology Department or to an organization of the donors choice.

Sheldon was born January 31, 1936 to Nels and Sarah (Finstad) Johnson in Red Wing, Minnesota. He graduated from Red Wing High School in 1954 and attended Mankato State University. He was united in marriage to Marlys Boldt on April 30, 1955 in Red Wing. He served with the National Guard in Red Wing and later moved to Petaluma, CA where he served with the US Army Security Agency and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. They returned to Minnesota in 1965, residing in South St. Paul, where he was employed with Armour Company and continued to serve in the Reserves. In 1968, they moved to Mankato, where Sheldon became a tax examiner for the State of Minnesota. He retired from active Reserves in 1993 and from the State of Minnesota in 2001.

Sheldon was a member of American Legion Post 11, Mankato Elks Club, Mankato Moose Lodge, and was a past president of the Mankato West Wrestling Booster Club. He enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, fishing, and camping.

Sheldon is survived by his wife, Marlys Johnson of Mankato; two sons, S. Scott Johnson and wife, Debbi Sue of Farmington, Timothy Johnson of Redding, CA; four grandchildren, Elizabeth and Kristin Johnson of California, Ethan and Nash Johnson of Farmington; two sisters, Marian Gardas, Mildred Sanvidge and husband, Carl all of Red Wing; sister-in-law, Shirley Reuter and husband, Francis of Red Wing; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Sheldon was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Sarah; one sister, Lucille Daeffler.
