Mercedes Ann (Randby) Cox, age 78, of Garden City, died Wednesday, February 1, 2006 at Immanuel St Joseph's Hospital in Mankato. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 4, 2006 at St Peter's Lutheran Church in Vernon Center, with Rev. Thomas Lock officiating. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. on Friday at Lake Crystal Mortuary, and also one hour prior to service at the church on Saturday. Burial will be in Garden City Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society.
Mercedes was born on December 8, 1927 in St. James, to Marcus and Agnes (Knudson) Randby. She attended Watonwan County Country Schools, graduated from Madelia High School in 1945 and Mankato State Teachers College in 1947. She taught in Garden City and Worthington.
On August 22, 1953 Mercedes married Lloyd Cox at Rosendale Lutheran Church, rural Madelia. She was a homemaker who was very active in church, school and community activities. A member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Vernon Center, she was active in the Ladies Aid, serving many years as President, LWML and was a former Sunday school teacher. In addition, she belonged to the TTA Sewing Club and the Post 276 Legion Auxiliary, Amboy. A prizewinning baker, Mercedes also enjoyed family camping trips, trips to Branson, MO, knitting, embroidery and the Minnesota Twins.
She is survived by her husband, Lloyd; five children: Barbara (Dennis) Dobie of Mankato, Joann (Larry) Rosenfeld of Arlington, Allan (Margaret) Cox of Coon Rapids, Laurie (Tom) Tacheny of Mankato, and Douglas Cox & his special friend, Susan Dirks of Minneapolis; eleven grandchildren: Christopher, Stephanie & Alyssa Dobie, David & Leann Cox, Tiffany, Matt & Mitchell Rosenfeld, Eric Cox & fiancé, Sarah Jensen, Marcus & Olivia Cox, and Dan & Sheila Tacheny; two great-grandchildren: Blake & Cassandra Cox; brothers and sisters: Delores Randby of St. Louis Park, Norman (Karen) Randby of Spooner, WI, Norma Randby of Rochester, Dennis (Patricia) Randby of Amboy; sisters- and brothers-in-law: Darline (Edward) Ward of Mankato, Myrtle Cox of Omaha, NE, Dale (Mona) Cox of Clemmons, NC; and nieces & nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and great-granddaughter, Caitlyn Cox.
