Walther C. Gullixson, age 92, of Mankato, died Saturday, January 7, 2006 at Immanuel-St. Josephs Hospital in Mankato.
Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Mankato with Rev. John J. Petersen officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Mankato Mortuary and one hour prior to the service at church on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Walther C. Gullixson Scholarship Fund at Bethany Lutheran College.
Walther Christian Gullixson, son of the Rev. George A. and Minnie (Olsen) Gullixson, was born December 28, 1913 in Chicago, IL. He graduated from Bethany Lutheran College in 1934 and from Concordia Lutheran Seminary, St. Louis, MO in 1940. He was a soloist for The Lutheran Hour and his love of music was spread throughout his life. He was united in marriage to Mildred Reese of Kennewick, WA on January 25, 1946. The Lord blessed their marriage with six children.
Walthers first church was Parkland Lutheran Church in Tacoma, WA and he served there for 16 years. He also served East and West Paint Creek Lutheran Church, Waterville, IA; Our Saviors and Bethany Lutheran Church of Princeton, MN; Bethel Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, SD and Oslo Lutheran Church of Volga, SD. From 1953-1973, he served as secretary to the Evangelical Lutheran Synod.
In 1980, he retired and moved to Mankato. During his retirement, he served seven church vacancies, served on various boards for the synod and also acted as archivist. In the Mankato community, he served the AARP 55 Alive Mature Driving program for Southern Minnesota and served as secretary to the Golden Kiwanis on Hilltop for a number of years.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Gullixson of Mankato; six children, Rev. Theodore (Diane) Gullixson of Forest City, IA, Norman (Becky) Gullixson of Cannon Falls, MN, Margaret Gullixson of Buena Park, CA, James (Connie) Gullixson of Mankato, Lois (Steve) Johnson of Mankato, Esther Gullixson of Lake City, MN; 12 grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Walther was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers.
