Donald C. Olsen, age 84, of Mankato, died Sunday, December 11, 2005 at Immanuel St. Josephs Hospital in Mankato.



Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 15, 2005 at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in Mankato, with Rev. John Wilmot officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post 11. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday at Mankato Mortuary with a 3:45 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.



Donald Chester Olsen was born on December 17, 1920 in Mankato to Chester Chet and Dorethy (Kranz) Olsen. Don was a graduate of Mankato High School and Mankato Commercial College. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Following his military service, he went into partnership in his familys business, Olsen Texaco Bulk Service. After his father retired, Don continued with the business and expanded it to include convenience stores. He stayed active in the business until his death. Don was united in marriage to Rita Muellerleile on August 21, 1951 at All Saints Catholic Church in Madison Lake.



Don was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, American Legion Post 11, Knights of Columbus, Eagles Club and a lifelong member of the American Federation of Musicians. Dons hobbies included stamp, pipe and coin collecting. In his later years he especially enjoyed attending concerts and area parades. Don enjoyed telling jokes and spending time with his family.



Don loved and had been very active in music during his life. He played accordion and string bass. His music career began during his high school years playing radio shows and continued by playing with many area bands, including Spike Haskell, Clete Frederick, Marv Tenhoff, and Norma Collins.



Dons survivors include his wife, Rita Olsen of Mankato; five children, Dianne (James) Bittenbinder of Fairmont, Rick (Julie) Olsen of Mankato, Denise (Tom) Zernechel of Mankato, Donita (Ron) Jahnke of rural Mankato, Ron Olsen of St. Louis, MO; ten grandchildren, Ryan and Nick Bittenbinder, Tj, Cody (Krista), and Tezary Zernechel, Jennifer, Jessica, Jackelynn and Michael Jahnke, Jon Olsen; one great-grandson, Kaiden Olsen; nieces, nephews and cousins. Don was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Warren.
