George V Nelson

World War II veteran, George V. Nelson, age 86, died Wednesday, October 26, 2005 at his Mankato home.

A memorial mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church with Rev. Peter Nosbush officiating. A private family burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Mankato. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday (TODAY) at Mankato Mortuary with a 7 p.m. prayer service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Clara and John Haefner Scholarship Fund in care of Schola.

George was born February 26, 1919 in Mankato to Charles and Elizabeth (Laven) Nelson. He attended schools in Mankato and graduated from Mankato High School in 1937. He attended U of M Farm School and Mankato Commercial College. He served in World War II with the 215th CA (AA) in Kodiak, Alaska and 89th Infantry Division in Europe. He married Janet Haefner on March 2, 1946 in Mankato.

George worked for Model Dairy, later the Williams Pipeline and then Honeymead Products Company. He was a former Eagle Boy Scout, President of Noon Exchange Club, President of Southern Minnesota Traffic Club, and a former member of Southern Minnesota AMS Club. He farmed and lived in rural Lake Crystal for 18 years. He was a barbershopper for 30 years, 17 years with the Lake Crystalairs and 13 years with the Mankato Riverblenders. He was a volunteer at ISJ Hospital, Law Enforcement Center and the Hospice program. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

George is survived by his wife, Janet Nelson of Mankato; two sons and their wives, Richard and Ann Nelson of Mankato, Gary and Cindy Nelson of Rochester, three daughters and their husbands, Gigi and Mike Portner of New Ulm, Kay and Dean Wagner of St. Cloud, and Marie and Tom Schutter of Truman; 13 grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Charles and Shirley Nelson of Saint Paul, a sister and her husband, Susan and Jack Pollack of Huntington, NY; many nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Mary and Hilda.
