Lyle Arnold Halberg, age 86 of Mankato, died, Monday, December 8, 2008 at Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 11, 2008 at Mankato Mortuary. Burial will be in Scandinavian Cemetery in Forest Lake. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Thursday.
Lyle was born on January 23, 1922 in Hudson, Wisconsin to Carl and Nora (Kreutzer) Halberg. He graduated from Hudson High School in 1940. He worked for the Omaha Railroad in the car repair shop. On August 2, 1942 he married Dorothy Jean Leuthner and a few months later enlisted in the Air Force. He served from November 1942 until 1946. In the service he attended Aircraft Mechanics School and Instructor's School becoming a power turret specialist for almost two years. Discharged as a Staff Sergeant. Following his return to civilian life was spent working as an auto mechanic in three garages and as an inspector at Western Electric in St. Paul.
In 1949 he left Western Electric to attend Northwestern Radio and Television Institute. In just over two years he completed a course in basic radio and electronics, radio servicing, industrial electronics, and radio station controls and announcing. He held a first class radio operator's license. After finishing schooling he was with the Golden Rule in St. Paul doing television servicing. In 1951 he became an employee of Minneapolis-Honeywell as a design technician. He and his family moved from Forest Lake to Brooklyn Center in 1955. In his leisure time he served as an assistant scout master to Boy Scout Troop #403. In January 1956, he went to Magnetic Controls as Chief Inspector, working there for 11 years. He then went to work for 3M where he was employed for 21 years and retired in 1987.
After his wife Dorothy's death in 1993, Lyle met Shirley (DeMars) Fitzloff. They married on November 6, 1998. Since the mid 90's they have spent their winters in Pharr, TX where Lyle was a choir member, photographer, and responsible for the public address system of their mobile home park. He always enjoyed music, dancing, and travel.
Lyle was a Mason, and in 1972 he was Master of Arcana Lodge #187, and he was also a life member of the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley of Mankato; son, Gary (Judy) Halberg of Roseville; daughter, Wendy (Bill) Amesbury of Mission, TX; four grandchildren, Justin (Lori) Halberg of Fridley, Christopher Halberg, Amber Halberg, and Kayla Halberg all of Roseville; step-children, Greg Fitzloff of St. Clair, Roxanne (Jeff) Seys of Mankato, Dick (Cheryl) Fitzloff of St. Clair, and Jackie Fitzloff of Rochester; six step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and many nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy; son-in-law, Michael Danberry; and sister, Evelyn Rossing.
