Charles Sylvester Baynes, age 78, of Mankato, formerly of Madison Lake, died Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato.
A memorial service will be held 12:00 p.m., Saturday, December 6, 2008 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Marysburg, rural Madison Lake. Visitation will be 10:30 a.m. until the service time at the church on Saturday. Burial will be in Marysburg Catholic Cemetery. Mankato Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
Charles was born June 19, 1930 to Sylvester and Edna (Guentzel) Baynes in Jamestown Township, Blue Earth County, where he later attended the Sugar Grove Country School. He married Shirley Mason in June of 1953 and they later divorced. Charles farmed in Jamestown on the family farm for many years. He worked construction, owned and operated Charlie's Repair near Madison Lake and plowed snow for various businesses in the area. He retired and moved into an apartment in Mankato in June 2001 and recently to Old Main Village. Charles was a dedicated AA member for more than 30 years and helped many others through tough times. He was also a Catholic Order of Foresters member.
Charles is survived by his five children, Darlene (Howard) Weckworth of Arlington, Chuck (Judy) Baynes of Eagle Lake, Floyd (Carol) Baynes of Faribault, Mary Buesgens of Lakeville, and Steve Baynes of Owatonna; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Tony (Liz) Baynes of Minneapolis; one sister, Rosemary (Marvin) Mock of Mankato; five step-siblings, Lucille (Wally) Lang of New Ulm, Marilou (Vic) Hofmeister, Dot (Al) Beckwith, Ted (Rita) Wolfe, and Bonnie (Jack) Friedrichs all of Mankato; also nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
