Ward W West

Ward William West, age 90, of Mankato, died Friday, November 21, 2008 at Immanuel "St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at Centenary United Methodist Church in Mankato with Rev. Pam Serdar officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Centenary United Methodist Church or Meals on Wheels. Mankato Mortuary handled the arrangements.

Ward was born on October 28, 1918 in Spirit Lake, IA. He was the son of Jesse and Eleanor (Gardner) West. Their family moved to a farm just west of Lake Crystal in 1926, where he attended school and graduated from High School in 1936. He married Chrystal Wilkinson of Franklin, MN in 1944. The first three years of their married life they farmed near Wadena and then moved back to Mankato where he tried weed spraying for a short while. He worked for Paper Services and then for 28 years was with Marigold Dairies, and earned the reputation of being the friendly milkman. Remembering names and spelling was his forte. He was the champion 2004 regional senior spelling contestant at Owatonna, and has quite a time living that down. He was head usher at Centenary United Methodist Church for many years. He also coached the boys softball team for a few seasons. He found much satisfaction in the "Meals on Wheels" program which he headed for years, (with so many wonderful volunteer workers). He had patience you wouldn't believe when it came to fishing. He liked to go deer hunting too. You could find him any afternoon in the Library; he was their best customer.

Ward is survived by his wife, Chrystal of Mankato; two daughters, Karen Buskey of Shoreview, MN, and Kathy West of Seattle, WA; three grandchildren, Nicole (Gary) Hager, Jennifer (Kristen Lawson) Buskey, Scott (Jessica) Buskey; two great-grandchildren, Maxwell and Ethan Buskey; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by son, Bill (Ward Jr.) in 2003; two brothers, Lloyd (Viola) and Dale (Ivie).
