Billie MacPherson Carleton, "Miss Billie", age 83, died November 20, 2008 at her Lake Crystal home.
Funeral service 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 22, 2008 at the Grace United Methodist Church in Vernon Center with one hour of visitation prior to the service. Burial will be in Cambria Cemetery. A memorial service will be held in Kansas at a later date.
Miss Billie was born August 8, 1925 in Wilson County, Kansas to Silas Oliver and Jennie (Garner) MacPherson and was raised on a ranch. She graduated from Fredonia High School in 1942 and later from Pittsburg State University with a teaching degree. She taught eight grades for two years in a one room country school near Buxton, Kansas. She married Robert Carleton of Duluth, MN in Fredonia, KS in 1946 when he came home from the Army. They made their home on a farm by Good Thunder for over thirty years, raising their six children. They spent time in Guatemala starting a rubber plantation.
Miss Billie enjoyed classes at Mankato State College and was a member and former regent of Daughters of the American Revolution, Penwoman's Club, Blue Earth County Republican Party Chairwoman and American Legion. She wrote a political column titled Billie's Bit and then Billie's Bits, which were carried in local newspapers. She was a free lance journalist traveling to Rhodesia and South Africa.
In 1979, she married Willis Johnston in Oklahoma City. She spent her later years in Lake Crystal, where she especially enjoyed being close to her children and grandchildren.
Miss Billie is survived by three sons, Stuart (Genette) Carleton of Mankato, Bruce (Diane) Carleton of New Ulm, Douglas (Deb) Carleton of Hager City, WI; three daughters, Susan (Ray) Jirele of Waseca, Margaret (James) Franzen of Edina, Jacqueline (David) Noy of Vernon Center; 27 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Crystal Jump of Parsons, KS, Doris Wever of Bella Vista, AR; one brother, Bruce (Lee) MacPherson of Altoona, KS; many nieces and nephews. Miss Billie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Willis Johnston; five sisters, Eulalia Smith, Zeda Veillon, Betty Thompson, Blossom and Marigold MacPherson; and three brothers, Erbie, Paul and Frank MacPherson.
