Merlyn Donald Buck, age 73 of Mankato, died Saturday, December 4, 2010 at Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato due to heart failure.
Memorial service will be held 12:00 p.m., Friday, December 10, 2010 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in North Mankato, with Rev. Vance Becker officiating. Burial will be in Minneopa Cemetery in Mankato at a later date. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. on Thursday at Mankato Mortuary and continues one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
Merlyn was born on February 4, 1937 in Kelso Township, Sibley County, MN. He was the son of John and Odeile (Schnackenberg) Buck. Merlyn was a 1955 graduate of Arlington Green Isle High School. He was united in marriage to Marvilla Fries on June 30, 1956 in Arlington. Following their marriage they made their home in Mankato. Merlyn worked for 48 years in the sheet metal trade. He was employed with Jones Sheet Metal, Cuddy Mechanical, MSU, and Mankato Plumbing & Heating before buying Thorset Sheet Metal. Merlyn also taught evenings at vocational school for 25 years. He sold his business and retired in 2005. Merlyn was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and the Eagle's Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, trap shooting, playing cards and pool.
Merlyn is survived by his wife, Marvilla of Mankato; two sons, Jeffrey Buck and Gregory Buck, both of Mankato; daughter, Brenda (Rob) Hortenbach of LeSueur; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two brothers, Norman (Joanne) Buck of Owatonna and John (Deb) Buck of Owatonna; sister, Geraldine Kroelles of New Ulm; four sisters-in-law, Marlene Paulson and special friend, Frank Fehland of St. Paul, Mary Ann (Eldred) Harder of LeSueur, Kathy (Leonard) Biersdorf of Monticello, and Dee Buck of Idaho; also nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Laurie; brother, Orwin Buck; brother-in-law, Orville Kroelles.
