Byron M. Howard, age 92 of Mankato, died Sunday, November 21, 2010 at his home.
Celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, November 28, 2010 at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Mankato with Rev. Steve Kidder officiating. Private family burial with Military Honors will be in Sterling Cemetery, rural Mapleton, MN. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m., until the time of service at the church on Sunday. Mankato Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Byron was born March 28, 1918 to Olga and Ben Howard in South Fork, Yucatan-Houston Township. He graduated from Houston High School and became a Dairy Herd Improvement Supervisor. He was drafted into the Army and while on leave married Irene Sharp on May 9, 1942. They enjoyed 68 years of marriage. He served during World War II in the U.S. Armys 10th Mountain Division (ski troops) in Italy as a liaison officer. Due to his outstanding service he was promoted to Captain and was honorable discharged on December 8, 1945. After the war Byron farmed and sold insurance part time on a farm near Mapleton, Minnesota. He was the first agent licensed to sell for Farm Bureau Insurance and had the first million dollar agency in Minnesota. In 1960 he was promoted to division manager. After serving as division manager in Redwood Falls for two years, he was promoted to state sales director and moved to St. Paul. He won many awards in his positions and traveled internationally until his retirement in 1980. During his free time Byron was an avid fisherman and loved to curl and golf.
After retirement Byron and Irene moved to their cabin on Portage Lake during the summers where they entertained grandchildren and friends and relatives. During the winters they enjoyed dancing and their friends in Sun City West, Arizona. Eventually they chose to live full time in Mankato, Minnesota.
Byron and Irene had four children: Gary (Chris), Byron Lee (Connie), Carole Lund (Ronn), and Steven (Barb). Byron Lee preceded him in death as did his mother, father, and two brothers, Otto and Milton. Byron was a wonderful grandfather to eight grandchildren and great grandfather to eleven great grandchildren.
Byron Howard was a devoted husband and wonderful father, grandfather, great grandfather. He will be missed beyond measure.
